Oscillating and traffic clearing lights thread

This is how they look...

That is exactly what the halogen one looks like, all you need are a set of nice alleys from an edge, R&R the strobes for them and you should be set.

It's the same housing..... It's the flasher I can't find... or decide on at least...

I don't know about other bars, but the Piercer II I have just ran off of the relay board.

Was there a stand alone flasher like some of the self powered strobe Piercers? That would be cool.

I'd use the programable Whelen flasher board, it has a few patterns, and is small and cheap. It has a cool double flash that I like. ChargerLighting had them for like $15.

In the OSP bar it could be used as a take down supplement or flashed with the takedowns. I was assuming it was run off the same flasher, I wasn't sure though. I suppose I could use an extra piercer II housing and add the bulbs and a standard edge flasher.

Transitioning this thread inot an official oscillating and traffic clear light thread. Post pics of your mars, rotorays, stingers, dynarays, propellorays etc...

Oscillating warning light for emergency vehicle

Rotatable warning signal light - FED ENTPR INC

Very nice collection,

My faves are the Mars 888 and the Federal Meteor. I like the Code 3 stinger but the pattern is to random. I have found a Mars 888 with a aircraft landing lamp (100K candle power) gets um out of the way.

?? in an MX ??

I had an MX that had a center stinger on each side in the center where the diamond mirror would be. They had contact plates on fiber boards with control boxes underneath. The lights would slow or fast oscillate front or rear, or they could rotate fast or slow. Very cool but one of mine was shot as the contacts were worn. It was a first generation MX with the speaker center.

No, you did not have a stinger 86_1_b.jpg in an MX7000. Please read the OP and you will see why. :bonk:

Please see the sticky (this post) about stingers vs stingrays..... :p

You are misusing a term as a reply to a post that was correcting the misuse of a term in a thread started to correct the misuse of that very term........ :duh:

I started a project mx bar a while back but I never have gotten it finished , I was going to load it up with all of the cool features, stingrays , smart intersections and oscilazers , I have some parts but not all of them.

I got one of those from work this last week.

The motor mount broke, so I zip tied it down.

The lens part where the screws go to mount it to the edge bar is cracked.

Can you still get the len's? Or should I just glue it?

I enjoyed seeing "my" video here on eLightbars, glad it could be of service. Thanks for posting the link!! The Stinger is much better/brighter in person!! I also have a couple vids of Stingers at night in my collection on youtube. Just type in my user name with the word Stinger behind it in the search box and enjoy!

It is a shame that oscilating light is vanishing from the majority of emergency vehicles over the past decade around my part of the world.. Thankfully Power Arc and the new Roto Rays are experimenting with oscillating/spinning LED's. Federal Signal began the process of discontinuing their oscillating Meteor light.. Also known as an "M" light or TCL "traffic clearing light" back in 2009.. But, I still see it on new Chicago FD apparatus below the front window? Maybe they will have to go back to the Mars 888??

Oh, and Code 3 PSE still offers their oscilaser in a flush mount unit with polished bezel. Maybe there is still hope??

Here are some pics of the "sweeps" offered in the non-flush standard intensity.... and videos of the flush mount intensity I speced with sweeps, rotators and oscilasers.

John Dorgan once told me that HPD use a custom Federal eacon Ray 174 with a steady burn cruise light. From the old Hawaii Five-O TV series it does look like this is the case. John said this was one the most rare types of B:)eacon Ray. Anyone have any more information?

John was right. Even he hadn't laid his hands on one!

Although not an oscillating beacon,

HPD also used Whelen Rota-Beam Model 44, 55, and 22s that had been retrofitted with cruise lights.

See the ROTA-BEAM Family thread in the vintage stickies.

I also learned today that less than 300 were made by Federal Sign & Signal. The same person told me that the honolulu PD musems used to have one in their display on HPD police cars. Anyone know why the crusie light?

I worked for a security company for awhile and drove a caprice with a lp6000 with a center oscilaser in clear we also had 2 standard rotators on each side in amber with amber lenses take downs and alleys the oscilaser was on a separate switch was great for getting peoples attention parked in fire lanes etc.

has anyone ever heard of these lights ?

Any ideas of age, value , etc ?

Search the site for Roto-Ray or Rotoray, not Moto-Ray. There should be several threads with info. I've never heard it called a Moto-Ray, so if you've come across one with that label, please post the pics!

Mr. John. I will post pics this afternoon. Its not a Roto, Definitely labeled Moto-Ray. I found it in a collection, and I snagged it while I could

I heard that buckeye iron works made an oscillating light, I was also told it wasa rebranded carpenter light.. so I am really curious.

Buckeye Moto-Ray

Model 507

6 volt

Patent No 2123090

The lighthead seems to be a K-D Model 850, or at least the glass lens is. The long upright bolts on the side are in place for display only, to keep the light upright and attached to a display base.

Nice! It does exist... I had heard that buckeye made an oscillating light.... it's true. May be one of a kind. Very nice indeed.

Sweet! I had never even heard the rumor about this one existing. It does look similar to some of the Carpenter Lights. Very cool find.

So thats who made this light. I have a seen this light in a few pictures, but never could find out who made it. I even have a diescast model of a late 30's chiefs car and it has this light on top. Sweet.

The last the theory I had was that these were actually carpenter lights rebranded or retrofitted, which had been the situation in another case.

But that appears to have been wrong in this instance. We will be getting a separate post for this light together when there are more pics. This is really a cool find.

There was a post where someone claimed they saw a drawing of a buckeye iron works "open revolving beacon". Basically a horizontal plane of rotation on a rotoray with the bulbs facing out... like an aircraft light or domeless beacon. That was a freeyabb.com era post though, with no reference. At the time I dismissed it, now I am looking for the patent image or drawing.

I recently purchased a Buckeye Moto Ray light. It is a 12 volt. I am trying to determine the value of it. I am posting photos of my light. Also, does anyone have any idea how many of these were made. They appear to be fairly rare.

is it possible to mount a half filter to the front of a oscilaser?

i want to redo this setup i have

and will those mount in a excalibur? or a mx without a special mount thing?

i ask because i haven't tried it yet

those bars have 2 freeform mx rotators in them, im going to try to put some of the metal ones i got in it, or maby try n see what some xl rotators look like in it

the mx and Excalibur use a special mount, IIRC its to support the back side, I think you could make something work if you don't have the correct brackets

Correct, however they will not fit in the first gen of the MX. This was the one where you had to remove the rotator reflector to access the motors and lower assemblies.
