I do not know if the black topped domes were to protect the gears from UV damage, but it definitely helped with getting the reflectors and mirrors to produce a more visible flash in bright sunlight. -

Nice, my biggest issue with these is because of UV exposure baking either the gears for the rotators or the worm gears on the motors.
