KANSAS CITY, Mo. --
Police released Wednesday to KMBC-TV dramatic video of officers chasing a wrong-way driver on Tuesday afternoon. The pursuit ended when the suspect collided with three other vehicles on U.S. 71.
The video shows an officer driving the wrong way down U.S. 71 in pursuit of the driver and captures the horrifying sounds of the crash. The officer had raced along side streets in Kansas City at speeds topping 70 mph before catching sight of the driver on U.S. 71.
Six people were hurt when the red pickup truck hit a vehicle traveling on 55th Street and pushed that vehicle into two stopped cars. The injuries in the collision ranged from serious to minor.
The driver, Brian K. Rimmer, 30, of Kansas City, was charged with eight felonies in connection with the crash. His bond was set at $250,000, according to court records.
On the dash cam video, the officer at the scene orders the driver five times to "Get on the ground" after the crash.
The officer then checks on other drivers involved in the collision.
"Start a couple of MAST (ambulances.) Are you OK, bud?" the officer asks one driver.
Other officers and drivers scramble to assist those hurt.
Records show Rimmer was just released from a Missouri prison in April after entering in January.
He was convicted in 2006 of possessing a controlled substance and assaulting a law enforcement officer. He was sentenced to a 7-year prison sentence. Missouri officials say the driver has been in and out of prison since 2006 for parole violations.
Jackson County prosecutors charged Rimmer with five counts of second-degree assault in connection with the chase and crash. He also was charged with tampering with a motor vehicle, fleeing and operating a vehicle with a revoked license.
Rimmer has prior driving convictions, according to court documents.
The chase lasted 25 minutes. It began at a Raytown Walmart. Police said they saw the occupants of the stolen pickup breaking into cars. As they moved in for an arrest, the driver took off.
KMBC photojournalist Jeff Roberts said the driver left the Walmart going the wrong way and continuing driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 350 before winding his way over on U.S. 71.
