I have an affinity for these early 17s as it was on the roof of the pumper of my VFD I rural KY…now in the collection of my brother (it is a 1957 vintage—same as my brother!). It would be easy to acquire a FS label to replace the obliterated WS Darley label because the screw holes are in the same position. Or, better yet, find a replacement Darley label. Either way, nice snag!

There ya go! Very nice!! Might I suggest that you keep the original trimmed skirt (polished up a bit) and get a rubber gasket for the cut edge and display it like the picture you shared with us. It’s among the original BeaconRay designs and a classic! Keep us posted on your progress!

I don’t really get rid of my lights unless I have double of them . This will be my first beacon ray that will stay in the collection. Are they valuable? I understand that there only worth what someone will pay for it but just curious

The 17 was/is quite ubiquitous…it was a “breakthrough” in terms of emergency vehicle lighting and very popular in its day. In other words, there are a lot of them. Yours is an early model and there are probably not as many survivors in good condition, but I would not say they are valuable, at least not like a 174. Still, it will make a nice addition to your collection.

Stripping it down and noticed a very interesting bulb with the initial ts etched in the glass with a giant reflector built into the bulb

Hi,

Yep. A PAR-36 bulb. Parabolic Anodized Reflector. They are spec'd by 1/8 of an inch. In this case 36 x 1/8 of an inch.

It's a Spot Lens, so not like the old PAR headlights (which were larger and, even larger, depending on 4- or 2- bulb headlight designs) where you see a lot of little lenses in that front glass. Flood patterns and Trapezoidal patterns. Spots are smooth.

The TS is the brand. Tung Sol. Also lots of GE and Westinghouse and Sylvania ones out there, too.

Have fun.

Oh, and pay attention to voltage here. Lots of these Beacon Rays were 6 volt as well as 12 volts. Plus some 24 volt ones here and there, but they are far fewer and further between.

I know that the original tag says 12 volt, but these have a way of having been converted over in both directions. I once modded a 12v Hill Light to 6v for use on a 1950 Ford.

Stan
